Fiddler
On The RoofA beloved Broadway musical gets a
fresh look in this potent revival.
Fiddler on the Roof first premiered at Broadway's Imperial
Theatre in 1964, immediately endearing itself to audiences
with its simple story of the traditions that bind a family.
Since the original Fiddler (which ran an astonishing eight
years!), there have been four revivals of the well-loved show,
including this production, which opened at the Minskoff
Theatre on February 26, 2004.
What makes this Fiddler so different is the vision of
acclaimed British director David Leveaux (the man who gave us
Antonio Banderas in Nine), who has worked with the original
authors to infuse the show with a fresh vitality and vision.
Now starring in the show is hilarious Tony winner Harvey
Fierstein, who's gone from being a mother in Hairspray to
playing papa Tevye in Fiddler, more than holding his own
against the memory of famous Tevyes like Zero Mostel and Topol.
The story of Fiddler--inspired by the stories of Sholom
Aleichem--concerns Tevye and his daughters, who are yearning
for something new even as great changes are happening in the
world outside their village of Anatevka. The score includes
such songs as "If I Were a Rich Man," "Matchmaker,
Matchmaker," "Sunrise, Sunset" and "To Life."
